General Information Invitational Canoe
BACKGROUND: As you know we are an Outdoor Education Center that provides a variety of programs for people of all ages throughout the year. The Aloha Foundation is our parent organization, established by alumni of the Aloha Camps to purchase the Camps from the original owners. The oldest of these camps is Aloha, established in 1905, for girls ages 12 through 17. Aloha Hive, on neighboring Lake Fairlee, was established in 1915 for girls ages 7 through 12. Camp Lanakila began in 1923 for boys ages 8 through 14. In 1978 the Hulbert Outdoor Center was established. With the strength and support of friends and alumni, Hulbert has grown into a highly respected institution in the field of Outdoor Education in New England.
DATES: Arrival at Hulbert Outdoor Center is on Sunday, between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Departure will be Saturday, in the morning.
TRIP AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: The Rangeley Trip is for beginner and intermediate paddlers. Depending on the weather, you will be paddling 4 - 6 hours a day with breaks every 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Because of the nature of canoe trips, Hulbert Outdoor Center reserves the right to ask a participant to stay at Hulbert should we deem their physical condition would jeopardize the health or safety of that individual or other individuals on the trip.
HEALTH FORM: As with all of Hulbert Outdoor Center’s active trips, you will be expected to complete a HEALTH EXAMINATION FORM with your health care providers signature.
ACCOMMODATIONS : Your accommodations while at Hulbert are in our winterized cabins. Each has two baths, one each for men and women. The cabins have electricity, heat, and carpeted floors. They are comfortable and simply furnished. You will use your sleeping bags throughout the program, including our nights in the cabin. If you would prefer to use sheets and blankets while in the cabins, please feel free to bring them along. You will need to provide your own towels.
Accommodations while on our trip are in two-person tents, which Hulbert will provide. While on the trip we will be staying at designated campsites established by the State of Maine. With a bit of luck we will usually have our site to ourselves. Most have a picnic table, a rustic fireplace, and an outhouse. When we are at designated campsites we are expected by the State of Maine to utilize the outhouses.
CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT : We will provide all group equipment, such as stoves, tarps, cooking gear, tents, canoes, paddles, lifejackets (PFDs), etc. We will send you a suggested packing list for your personal clothes and equipment.
MEALS : Our meals are prepared and served family style, both while we are at Hulbert and while we are on our trip. Each of us will share in the responsibilities of cooking and cleaning. Meals are hardy and well-balanced. We will make many from scratch, providing you with an opportunity to gain a variety of outdoor cooking skills.
LEADERSHIP : This trip will be led by Jane Baron who is a Maine Guide from Kingfield Maine, and who has led many Elderhostel Canoe Trips for HulbertOutdoorCenter. Andy Petersen, an Aloha Alumni and staff, is one of our Elderhostel Trip Leaders as well.
FINANCES: Total all inclusive cost of the trip is $545. A non-refundable deposit of $200. will reserve a place on the trip for you. Your balance is due three weeks before the trip. Please make checks out to Aloha Foundation, or call our registrar, Lynn, to use your credit card.
