White Water Kayaking
Our white water kayaking trips are designed to help campers develop solid fundamentals. We begin our trips with an intoduction to the kayaks on flat water where we learn the basics of boat handling and water safety. River reading and paddling techniques will be introduced as the group progressively moves on to more challenging section of the river. Campers can expect to paddle class I and II rapids with the option to paddle class III rapids if it is possible to paddle in an appropriate and safe manner. Opportunities to learn to surf and practice rolling your kayak are built into the daily schedule.
Trip leaders are experienced paddlers who are very capable of assessing both the ability of the group and the nature of the challenge. They are trained to prevent unmanageable situations from occurring. The camper to counselor ration for our white water kayaking trips are 3:1.
Voyageurs partners with a similar, well-respected program, Chewonki, for our white water kayaking trips. Chewonki is one of the leading organizations providing white water kayaking instruction. Trip leaders are ACA white water certified, Maine Trips Leaders and Wilderness First Responders.
Like all of our trips, the white water kayaking is only part of the Voyageur's Experience. Camping, swimming, "Leave No Trace" outdoor ethics, outdoor cooking and time to relax in this beautiful environment come together to complete this exciting adventure.
