Ohana Camp Recreation
The activity options at Ohana are virtually endless, with many choices to fill your days. Our lakeside location provides opportunities for water sports of every kind. Back roads and woodland trails abound for local hiking and biking. The Green and White Mountains are just an hour away. In addition, we offer tennis, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, badminton, ping-pong, a game room and a playing field. Lovers of history, architecture, arts and culture will discover many quintessential New England towns nearby. Catching up on a good book, relaxing in the shade of a maple tree, or just reconnecting with yourself or family are also options here.
Swimming - The waterfront is equipped with a swim dock, rafts, a small sand beach with beach toys and a grassy lawn for picnicking or sitting and enjoying the lake view.
(Note: Adult guests are responsible for the safety of their children while swimming and wading. Ohana does not post lifeguards on the camp waterfront.)
Sailing - We have a number of small sailboats to use on the lake; sunfish, sailfish, a Javelin, and a Hobie. The lake usually has a good breeze to challenge your skills.
Canoeing - We have six 16 foot Mad River canoes and a supply of PFD’s in various sizes.
Kayaks - Great for kids and for exploring marshes. We have 16 single person Wilderness Systems Lake Kayaks – 10, 12 and 14 footers as well as 2 tandem kayaks.
Rowboats - More stable for fishing, we have two aluminum rowing boats.
Guest Boats - Are welcome at the dock on a first-come, space-available basis. Please arrange in advance.
Hiking - The Upper Connecticut River Valley is a wonderful location for hikers. Besides a multitude of local trails, woods roads and paths on our own properties and neighboring forestlands and fields, the Appalachian Trail (the longest part of America's national park system) passes through the valley on its 2000 plus mile journey from Georgia to Maine. Easily accessible day hikes such as Mt. Cube and Mt. Mousilaukee are a short drive away. (Upper Valley Tails Alliance & Appalachian Trail Conservancy). Access to Vermont’s Green Mountain Long Trail is one hour away to the West. New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest and the Presidential Range are an easy one hour drive. So you might say this area is a hikers’ paradise. Don’t forget your hiking boots and walking sticks. We have plenty of hiking maps and good advice waiting for you.
Biking - Feel free to bring your own road or mountain bike. We have a small number of mountain bikes to lend. Back roads are plentiful in the area – with roads that are terrific for street bikes and of course many that are perfect for a mountain bike. Folks often ride around Lake Fairlee for an interesting mix of architecture and wildlife. Perhaps you might like to bike to the lovely little farm stand known as Cross Roads Farm.
Tennis - We have two all weather courts (bring your own rackets).
Bird Watching - Take morning walks to look for the abundance of birds that nest in the area. We have organized walks every morning depending on interest. Bring your binoculars, or use your spotting scope right on your porch. We have a multitude of birds nesting in the area as well as a healthy warbler migration. Look for our resident loons, eagles and osprey. Our library has a nice selection of field guides.
Fishing - Kids can always catch perch right out front using any old pole and worms. Ages 15 and under do not need a license. The principal game fish is the smallmouth bass. Licenses and bait are available nearby.
Horseback Riding - Is available nearby.
Golf - The Lake Morey Golf Course is five miles up the road. A full service 18-hole golf course and home of the Vermont Open for over 50 years.
