Summer Voyageurs Trip Leader Positions

We believe that Hulbert's Voyageurs program provides one of the strongest wilderness and group experiences available to youth in the area, and realize that our leaders are the most important aspect of our success. As a staff, we work hard to provide a safe and exciting wilderness experience, as well as to create a delicate balance of empowerment, trust, and fun. Voyageurs Trip Leader Qualifications

Voyageurs Trip Leaders are individuals who have a demonstrated ability to conduct competently and independently, an extended wilderness experience with a group of eight to ten participants. Leaders must possess the ability to monitor safety, participant wellbeing, and group dynamics throughout the entirety of an intensive program. Voyageurs Trip Leaders should be:

  • at least 21 years old;
  • currently certified as Wilderness First Responder, or the equivalent, or higher;
  • currently certified in CPR;
  • currently certified as a Maine Trip Leader (certification may be available during staff training);
  • experienced at working with youth in a wilderness setting;
  • experienced in the form of wilderness travel required by their contracted trip;
  • preferably a graduate of a wilderness training program, such as NOLS;
  • preferably experienced with the practice of ropes course and initiative programming.

Trip Leaders are paid per diem and are hired per trip. Each trip has two, paid preparation days before the start of the trip. Leaders usually work a minimum of two trips throughout the summer, and often choose to work three or more trips. Room and board is provided while employed.

Voyageurs Assistant Trip Leader Qualifications

Voyageurs Assistant Trip Leaders are individuals who have a demonstrated ability to assist Trip Leaders, and to adhere to the model and process of an extended wilderness experience with a group of eight to ten participants. Assistant Trip Leaders will have opportunities to lead, learn, and develop skills from the model set by the Trip Leader. In addition, Assistants must posses the ability to monitor safety, participant wellbeing, and group dynamics throughout the entirety of an intensive program. Voyageurs Assistant Trip Leaders should be:

  • At least 18 years old, preferably 21 .
  • Currently certified as Wilderness First Responders, or the equivalent, or higher.
  • Experienced working with youth in a wilderness setting.
  • Experienced in the form of wilderness travel required by their contracted trip.
  • Preferably, experienced with the practice of ropes course and initiative programming.

Food & Equipment Manager and Voyageurs Support Staff Qualifications

The Food & Equipment Manager is responsible for organizing and delivering all of the food and equipment necessary for every trip. Duties include, but certainly are not limited to, food/equipment inventory, care/maintenance, orders, organizing, and packing into wanagans, systematically and efficiently. Voyageurs Support Staff are responsible for setting up, running, and assisting with the ropes course, driving, dropping off, picking up, and re-supplying trips, and assisting the Pack-out Equipment Manager. Support Staff will be scheduled according to the needs of the program.

Please note: the pay scale for a Support Staff position is different than that of a trip staff position. If a Trip Staff member chooses to work support when not scheduled for a trip, he/she will need to negotiate two separate pay rates for the summer.

Summer Ropes Course Positions

Hulbert Outdoor Center, as a program and facility of The Aloha Foundation, Inc., has been providing exciting, safe, and effective adventure programming since 1978. Thousands of schoolchildren, adults, and campers have participated in beneficial experiences through programs offered at Hulbert.

The high ropes course is often a focal point and a highlight of a Hulbert experience. The perceived risk of a ropes course experience is often limit-pushing and fun-inspiring, and results in positive growth when facilitated appropriately. Throughout our summer season, Hulbert offers morning and afternoon courses, Monday through Saturday, to campers participating in any one the Foundation's five summer camping programs.

Summer Ropes Course Staff Qualifications:

Summer Ropes Course Staff are individuals who have a demonstrated ability to conduct themselves in a professionally competent manner. They must possess the ability to monitor safety, participant well-being, and group dynamics throughout the entirety of a ropes course program. Summer Ropes Course Staff should be:

  • at least 18 years old;
  • currently certified in First Aid/CPR;
  • experienced working in a leadership role with youth, ranging from ages eight to 17; and
     
  • experienced with high ropes courses and experiential outdoor learning.

Summer Ropes Course Staff Responsibilities:

  • Facilitation of two ropes courses daily, including course set-up and take-down.
  • Supervision of several climbers at one time.
  • Supervision of Summer Camp Staff assisting on ropes courses.
  • Processing experiences on ropes course.
  • Inspection and maintenance of ropes course.

Summer Ropes Course Staff Compensation:

  • Salary: range beginning at $150 per six-day week, plus room and board.
  • Most evenings and Sundays off.
  • Course built to ACCT standards.

School Programs (Fall, Winter, Spring)

Hulbert Outdoor Center's School Program employs talented educators to work with children in a residential experiential education setting. The prime responsibility of an instructor is to work with participants in residential programs emphasizing teambuilding, ropes course, natural history, and other curriculum areas.  Previous experience with teambuilding and ropes course facilitation, natural history education, or other professional education experience is preferred.  Starting salary is $250 per week, plus room and board.
