The Hulbert Outdoor Center offers the following training programs for public open enrollment. Pre-registration is required for all of these courses. Wilderness First Responder

Join the staff of SOLO, nationally recognized leaders in the field of wilderness medicine and rescue, for a 80-hour intensive wilderness emergency care course. Learn skills needed to deal with emergencies in remote settings, with a focus on the extended care often required in wilderness medical emergencies. Practical simulations and lectures. Includes CPR. Excellent course for outdoor enthusiasts or outdoor trip leaders.
Cost: $755; day students $585. Fee includes meals, lodging and course. Pre-registration is required.

Wilderness First Responder Recertification

This two-day review is designed to recertify indiviuals previously certified as Wilderness First Responders. Although open to any WFR graduate, SOLO currently has reciprocity with WMI/NOLS and WMA; graduates of these programs can be recertified through SOLO providing their certification is current at the time of the course. CPR Recertification is available for an additional fee. Proof of eligible WFR and CPR training must be provided to SOLO before renewal cards will be issued.

Wilderness First Aid and CPR

Wilderness First Aid Part II

As a follow up to WFA, this course provides not only more in-depth information on topics already covered, including medical and environmental emergencies but also presents new skills like improvising litters and litter-carrying techniques. More hands-on practice with greater emphasis on leadership is a key element. Two day formats are taught as Part II with WFA as a prerequisite.

Advanced Wilderness First Aid

This four-day course is designed for individuals who want a more in-depth training in Wilderness First Aid in the backcountry. Outdoor enthusiasts, trip leaders, or anyone who works or travels in the back country will find this course important. Standard WFA information, plus medical and environmental emergencies, and skills to go with them. More hands-on practice, with greater emphasis on leadership. Taught by staff of SOLO. No prerequisites.

Backcountry Search & Rescue
November 1-2, 2008
This is a two-day (16 hours), introductory course in wilderness search procedures and techniques. Topics include: rescuer preparedness, search management, basic backcountry medicine, navigation, use of ropes and knots, and remote evacuation.

Wilderness EMT Module
December 6 - 7, 2008 and
December 13 - 14, 2008
This course is designed for Emergency Medical Technicians who are currently certified and work or play in rural and/or remote environments. Wilderness Modules are certified by the organizations providing training. Meeting guidelines established by the Wilderness Medical Society, SOLO's Wilderness Module has been approved by the National Registry of EMT's for 48 hours of continuing education . Practical simulations and labs provide practice in rescue skills.
Please Note: Course takes place over two weekends including Friday evenings. You must attend both sessions for full credit.

Winter Medicine, Rescue & Survival

This hands-on workshop covers the basics of winter first aid for outdoor leaders and outdoor enthusiasts. Focus is on how to deal with cold-related problems for the victim. 16 hours National Registry CEU's.

ACA Canoe Instructor Certifications
May 31-June 1, or June 7-8, 2008—Essentials of Canoeing, Flatwater Certification
May 31-June 2, or June 7-9, 2008—Moving Water Canoeing, Class 1 Whitewater Certification
June 10-11, 2008 - White Water Canoeing - pre-requisite: Moving Water Canoeing or equivalent certification
Swiftwater River Rescue (level 4) Dates TBD
American Canoe Association Certificate program to become an ACA Tandem Canoe Instructor, taught by ACA Instructor Trainers, Laurie Gullion and Mark Moore. White Water certification class taught by Mark Moore. Canoes, PFDs, paddles, and safety equipment provided. Paddlers must demonstrate basic boat control skills, teaching ability, safety awareness, and technical knowledge to obtain certifications.
Cost: $245 for 2 day program, day student $195.
$325 for 3 day program, day students $270.
$530. for White Water Certification - special rate for 5 day course (includes basic river)
