Special Activities at the Aloha Camps
A camper's day is filled with fun, interesting choices, and, just to make sure every day is unique, special events and activities abound. Some of these occur occasionally or once a summer: beach parties, banquets, the huge Bonfire on the 4th, Backwards Day, Olympics Day, carnivals or unit parties. Other activities are offered regularly, so that most campers have a chance to try them.
At Aloha, Hive and Lanakila, many campers enjoy the thrill of our ropes courses, with a spectacular "zip wire" ride 100 feet through the woods. Older campers may have a rock climbing experience on nearby Holt's Ledge.
Lanakila boys can build their own rockets to shoot off on our huge athletic field, while Horizons children might try beach volleyball by the blue waters of Lake Fairlee.
All in all, such a wonderful variety of activities brings lots of chances for learning and for succeeding – and lots of great fun as well! Ask for more details from the camp Director of the program that interests you. And don't forget, for a really intense trip program, see the information on our Voyageurs Trips in the Hulbert Outdoor Center section of our Web site.
Nature & Exploring
Stargazing, swamp-tromps, bird-paddles, bugs, rocks, and bunnies – there is so much to learn in Nature and Exploring. One of the most popular spots at Lanakila, for example, is the brook that runs through the campus, providing endless hours of good old-fashioned messing around with water and rocks.
Hiking, Biking & Canoe Trips
Over 1,100 acres of fields, hills and forests offer our campers lots of places to explore! But we do not stop there. Our vans travel across northern New England, introducing campers to great hiking, canoeing and even bicycling through this beautiful corner of the world.
With such a wonderful world to explore right at our doorstep, campers of all ages hike and camp in the White and the Green Mountains, as well as in the Adirondacks. Trips are chosen to match the hiker's abilities and the views are great from the summit! Lakes and rivers from Maine to New York state provide just the right variety of canoe tripping adventures. Older campers with the appropriate training and skill may try white water canoeing or backpacking for up to five days. Girls at Aloha Camp and boys at Lanakila might travel by mountain bikes to see the woods from a different perspective. Some trips for older campers or for Horizons children might well be co-ed.
Riding
Bring a hard hat and jodhpurs – our friendly horses await! Ring riding is available for Aloha and Hive campers, along with overnight trips and games, depending on each camper's ability and confidence.
Hive campers may enjoy an introductory experience at Hive for no extra cost. This introductory program includes tacking horses, horse care, and riding at Hive's own ring. Hivers who ride four to seven times a week during the school year and wish to have more extensive instruction may choose to enroll in a special program at Morton Farm for an additional fee.
Riding is offered for Aloha and Hive campers at the Dartmouth Riding Center at
the Morton Farm in Etna, NH. Space is limited. Riding is the one
activity at the Alohas for which there is an extra charge.
