The Aloha Difference

For more than 100 years, the Alohas have been known for their outstanding summer camps—and so much more.

By stepping away from technology and immersing ourselves in a simpler, natural world, we are able to focus on what matters most: authentic relationships, connection, community.

The word we hear most often to describe Aloha Foundation camps and programs? Transformative.

Philosophy

At the Alohas, we focus on creating community by embracing simplicity and putting value on meaningful face-to-face connections. We meet each individual where they are and understand everyone’s unique journey as a thread in the tapestry of our camps.

Each day we provide people in our programs the opportunity to make choices and challenge themselves in a noncompetitive space that supports safe risk taking. Decision making and goal setting are daily features of camp life, giving children and families a sense of agency in their lives. The ability to maintain your autonomy while showing care toward those around you is at the center of the camp experience—an approach that our campers, participants, and staff take with them and apply to their lives at home, school, and work.

Personal Growth

Woven throughout all Aloha Foundation programs and all activities – whether you’re going kayaking, setting tables for a meal in the dining hall, or singing in assembly – is a common sense approach to problem-solving and communication that we call Success Counseling. This is a process to help individuals become more effective versions of the people they want to be.

As both a psychological model and a set of skills based on internal control psychology, Success Counseling redefines what motivates us and shows us how to have much greater control over our emotions and happiness than most of us feel we have. It also allows us to understand why we do what we do, and how to use that information to create more success and freedom in our lives.

Quality Staff

A distinguishing factor of Aloha Foundation programs is our low, industry-leading camper-to-counselor ratio (two campers for every counselor). This means our dedicated counselor mentors are able to provide individualized support and attention for each camper. All staff are vetted through a combination of written applications, verbal and written references, face-to-face or video interviews, and direct observation during intensive pre-camp trainings.

Rigorous Accreditation

All Aloha Foundation camps and programs are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), the industry’s national association charged with ensuring high quality camp experiences. To receive ACA accreditation, our programs must successfully meet up to 300 specific standards. Of the more than 14,000 day and resident camps in the U.S., only 2,400 – or fewer than 20% – are ACA accredited. The ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to ensure their camp standards reflect the most up-to-date, research-based practices.
