The Gulick Legacy—Bequests and Planned Gifts
More than a century ago, Mother and Father Gulick founded the first of their legendary camps, Aloha. Followed in due course by Aloha Hive and Lanakila, and later by Hulbert Outdoor Center, Horizons, and Ohana Camp, the camps of the Aloha Foundation have become a legacy cherished by generations of campers and their families.
The charge of stewarding this legacy is a trust passed from generation to generation and is the only guarantee that the camps will be a continuing and ageless presence in the lives of children and adults, alike. As a member of the Aloha family, you can play a vital part in preserving this legacy for future generations by remembering the camps in your will.
Whether you are creating or rewriting a will, or by adding a simple codicil to an existing will, you can become one of the stewards of the Aloha camps. Your bequest can take any of several forms that complement your estate plan:
Outright Bequest—this can include a specific dollar amount or named securities, personal property, such as works of art or valuable collections, or real estate.
Sample language: I give to The Aloha Foundation, located in Fairlee, Vermont, the sum of (amount) for its general purposes.
Rest and Residue of Estate—this can include the gift of all or a portion of your estate remaining after specific bequests to others have been fulfilled.
Sample language: I give to The Aloha Foundation, located in Fairlee, Vermont, all (or a stated percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate for its general purposes.
Conditional Bequest—this bequest is only fulfilled in the event that a specific named recipient does not survive you, in which case their interest would pass to the Foundation.
Sample language: If my spouse does not survive me, I give the sum of (amount) to The Aloha Foundation, located in Fairlee, Vermont, for its general purposes.
Restricting Your Bequest—you may wish to restrict your bequest to a specific camp, or purpose, for example, campership or staff salary endowment. If your intention is to restrict your gift, please talk with Tom Miller about your plans before creating the bequest, as there are special qualifications which must be met and provisions to be considered.
Creating a Named Endowment—you can use a bequest to create a named fund that will become a part of The Aloha Foundation’s permanent endowment. A named fund can honor anyone you choose and all named funds are listed each year in the Foundation’s Annual Report, making the honoree’s name a part of the ongoing Aloha camps forever.
Charitable Remainder Trusts—all or a portion of your estate can be used to fund a charitable remainder trust (CRT). CRTs provide an annual income to a named beneficiary, either for the beneficiary’s life, or for a period of years, at the end of which the remaining value of the trust is given to The Aloha Foundation.
A CRT can be managed by a bank, or other fiduciary agent. If you would like to learn more about charitable remainder trusts and how they can benefit your family and your estate, please contact Tom Miller in the Foundation’s development office.
