After reviewing more than 50 resumes, interviewing four semi-finalists by phone and two finalists in person, the Hulbert search advisors recommended Brendan Madden to me for the position of Hulbert Director, and I heartily concurred. Brendan comes to us from one of the premier outdoor education and training organizations in the United States, the National Outdoor Leadership School, popularly known as NOLS ( www.nols.edu ). During his eleven-year career with NOLS he has served as a field instructor for summer and winter wilderness expeditions in backpacking, canoeing, mountaineering and XC skiing; as Supervisor of NOLS’ Yukon Program and Director of NOLS’ Rocky Mountain Program based in Wyoming; and finally as Assistant Director and business manager for NOLS’ Professional Training Program, providing customized wilderness and classroom-based courses to organizational leaders in business, education, government and the military. Prior to his work with NOLS, Brendan was a field instructor for Outward Bound Canada, leading wilderness experiences for students, youth-at-risk and adults. He, his wife Lindsey and just-born daughter Clare will reside at Aloha Manor upon their arrival in Fairlee in early August.
