STAFF PROFILE ~ Mike Evans ~ Lead Instructor
I consider myself lucky enough to have found a fantastic place to live, work and learn! The Hulbert Outdoor Center bravely decided to hire me as an Intern for a year – I am now eight months into this experience and have been asked to write a brief profile about myself!
I am originally from South Wales, but soon found myself moving all over the place as my father’s Navy career moved our family to England, Scotland, Portugal and then back to England! When I was 18, I joined the Navy, which I found to be a genuine character building experience! At 21 I went to University to study International Relations, and it was in this same year I discovered the joys of Summer Camp! I spent two seasons working at a camp in Concord, NH as a Challenge Course Coordinator; I instantly knew that Outdoor Education was a different way to engage with children and loved seeing them work their way through challenges – either individually or as a group.
Upon completion of my degree, I came to Hulbert in the fall of 2009 to build upon my previous experiences, and hopefully make inroads to a successful Outdoor Education career. Working with Hulbert Outdoor Center's School Programs has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, and being able to see the good work we do put into practice makes the hard work worthwhile! Although the winter has been quieter, we at the School Program office have been busy, keen to start off where we finished last season. Having had three months to reflect upon my abilities as an instructor, I am keen to get the first groups; keen to get the ball rolling again. This will be a quick and demanding year both personally and professionally – a busy school program, my own wedding in April, and a summer at Aloha!
Mike is one of the instructors that make up School Programs' team. Every one of our instructors has been trained and loves working with school-aged kids. We look forward to getting to know you!
